Successful start-up of Modulwrap roll wrapping line at UPM Tervasaari in Finland

The comprehensive wrapline delivery from Raumaster Paper (RMP) to UPM Tervasaari mill was successfully started up in October 2008. The production that the wrapline serves consists of release base paper, envelope and technical MG - grades.

This fully automated roll wrapping and handling line includes a modularized high capacity Modulwrap kraft roll wrapping machine with 3 industrial robots. The robots are applying the inner and outer headers as well as the customer labels. The space saving wrapping machine has been integrated to the existing roll handling system delivered by RMP. High speed slat conveyor is used to move rolls between the wrapping stations.
All functions are automated with a 30 second cycle time and the system is fully electric and thus hydraulic free. The automation package features graphical interfaces with easy to use diagnostics and process monitoring. Feedback from operators speaks highly of the well-defined and user-friendly system. Machine safety is managed with state-of-the-art failsafe controls preventing unnecessary disturbances.
The wrapping machine was delivered after full scale workshop tests.

Despite the tight schedule, the construction and start-up phases have been completed on time and in an excellent spirit of co-operation between the UPM project team, Raumaster Paper and sub suppliers.

The wrapping machine came on stream 3 days ahead of schedule, only a few hours after finishing the installation.
"Everything went according to our plans," explains Mikko Rissanen, Production Manager of PM 5. "Co-operation during the whole project from sales to startup between UPM and Raumaster Paper has been excellent. We chose this type of wrapping concept as it optimizes both capacity and quality in the wrapping of top quality grades."
As a result of the project the wrapping operations at the mill are now fully automated and safe instead of previous semi-manual function.
